Overview

The Grade Book in Grado is a digital grading workspace where teachers record student scores based on Grade Components defined by the school.

Each component represents a weighted criterion used to compute each student’s grade.

Grado automatically generates a Grade Book for any class whose subject has defined Grade Components.

If no components exist, faculty will use the Grade Sheet instead.

Encoding Grades

The Grade Book starts in a read-only state.
To enter or edit grades, use the Input Grades button.

Steps:

  1. Click Input Grades.

    • This unlocks the Grade Book for editing.

    • Teachers can now enter or modify scores.

    • This button is available only if the Grade Book is unlocked. (Locking and unlocking is managed by Admin.)

  2. Enter grades directly into the fields under each component.

  3. When done, click Preview Changes to save the draft or review your entries.

  4. Click Cancel to discard draft changes and revert to the last saved version.

💡 Faculty can continue editing the Grade Book until it is locked by the Admin.

💡 Assessment columns appear as A1–A10. Each component starts with 3 assessments by default and can have up to 10.
If more or fewer assessments are needed, contact a Grado administrator.

Reviewing and Applying Grades

After clicking Preview Changes, the Grade Book enters draft mode. In this mode, teachers can review entries before committing them.

Button Description

Applying Grades

  1. Click Apply Grades to finalize the entries.

  2. Grado automatically applies the assigned transmutation table for the subject.

  3. The transmuted scores appear in the Grade Sheet as the official term grades.

💡 Applying grades saves them as final for publishing. Edits can be made again only if the Grade Book is unlocked.

Understanding Grade Book Status

Status Description
Editable The Grade Book is unlocked and open for grade input.
Draft Grades have been entered and saved using Preview Changes.
Applied Grades have been committed and transmuted to the Grade Sheet.
Locked Editing disabled; only Admin can reopen.

💡 Faculty can still make changes as long as the Grade Book is not locked.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Grado supports several shortcuts to make grade encoding faster. These work for both raw input fields and dropdown-based grade fields.

General Navigation

  • Tab – Move to the next student or next field.

  • Shift + Tab – Move to the previous field.

  • Up/Down Arrows – Move between rows.

  • Enter – Open the grade field for editing; press again to confirm.

Dropdown Grade Entry

For fields that use dropdown options (e.g., letter grades or predefined numeric ranges), you can select values faster using your keyboard:

  • Type the first letter or number of the grade to cycle through matching options.

  • Example for letter grades: Typing A cycles through A+ → A → A- (repeat to navigate).

  • Example for numeric ranges: Typing 8 cycles through 80 → 81 → … → 89.

  • Stop when the correct value is highlighted and press Enter to confirm.

Tips for Faculty

💡 Save and preview changes regularly to avoid losing data.
💡 Use Preview Changes before Apply Grades to double-check entries.
💡 Confirm the correct transmutation rules with your school coordinator.
💡 Coordinate with Admin if the Grade Book appears locked before final grading.

Summary

The Grade Book allows teachers to record, review, and apply student grades for component-based subjects.

Grades move from editable to draft to applied, ensuring accurate computation and automatic transmutation before they appear in the Grade Sheet.
